April Kendall started out offering free family portraits to people affected by the Black Saturday bush fires and from there have worked steadily taking family portraits, corporate portraits, products, sport, animals...she'll photograph anything.
April says that the look of someone emotionally exposing themselves is just the most beautiful thing and a genuine honor to witness. "I guess this project just shows that despite having scars which some would want to hide from the world these already very brave people are able to share their amazing stories and give the rest of us something to think about!"

Lisa Auger - Scar Stories Photographer

She knew that by following the areas in photography that match her personality, she would get where she wanted to be, artistically and professionally. Lisa loves the outdoors and interacting with people. She has photographed family portraits, music and theatre performances, and food. Capturing the world is how she wants to be spending her life.
Lisa was diagnosed with Leukemia in her grade 12 year at high school. Her physical scars are small, but they are there. She wishes to set an example, through her Scar Stories shots, of how cancer survivors are walking among us always, even though they may not have the physical scars that reveal it.

Steve Tyssen - Scar Stories Photographer
It was only a few of years ago that he bought his first serious camera and he has since been enjoying shooting as many subjects and scenarios as possible. "I enjoy the personal experience you get from photography when you are struck by a certain scene and you capture and develop it in your own particular way." Steve believes that photography is about much more than just capturing the present - it is indeed an expressive art form. He enjoys shooting portraits of people in natural settings but he is also intrigued by landscapes and everyday places that he believes we take for granted.
Scar Stories is extremely close to Steve's heart because his younger brother Dave recently survived a life-threatening ordeal with tongue cancer. Being so close to what his brother had to go through has opened Steve's eyes to the important things in life and he realises better than most how difficult it is for people to regain their confidence after surgeries, especially with visible scars.

She is still very passionate about cameras and enjoys learning more about them as a whole. Fiona Vail - Scar Stories Photographer
Photography is my love, my life, my true passion
I have always been fascinated with photography and my passion started at a young age. My father was a hobby photographer and it was while looking through his collection of black and white film that I fell in love. Staring at the faded images of my beautiful mother in her 20s, young love, memories that my father had managed to capture forever from one single moment. To me that was, and still is, incredible.
Over the past seven years, I have journeyed through North America, South America, South East Asia, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia. With camera always in hand, I have found inspiration through capturing cultures, distant landscapes, customs and history. In early 2011, I made the decision to take my passion a step further and started Fiona Vail Photography, specialising in weddings, portraits, model portfolios and creative side projects.
I was introduced to Scar Stories through a friend I used to work with. Lauren was diagnosed with Cancer in her early 20s and has battled, overcome and made it to the other side – a huge inspiration to everyone around her. My nan was also diagnosed with Lung Cancer and sadly passed away, so I understand the impact the disease has on everybody. I was excited to be involved in this project and have found immense personal fulfilment through meeting two incredible young survivors, hearing their story and capturing their beautiful personalities with my camera. Photography for me is such a journey…. always changing, challenging and inspiring.

Photography is my passion and I like to make that shine in my work! Put simply, I love what I do!
I try to stay away from the typical and love to capture children and families in ways that are creative and show their natural beauty. For me, it's all about capturing the emotion and feeling.
Photography has played a significant role in my life for many years. Mostly self taught, I have recently completed a Certificate in Photography too. I have studied at Monash University (Arts with a Major in Psychology) and at RMIT (Bachelor of Social Work.) These foundations have given me a remarkable ability to empathize, perceive and understand the behaviours of children and families. I am able to adapt to any situation or session, as I strive to achieve the best images possible.
Working in the Photography Industry for the last 4 years, I am also a mother to 3 quirky, gorgeous boys, who constantly inspire me to capture character and uniqueness. I am driven by a belief that every single person is unique and beautiful. To have the ability to 'tell a story' in an image, or to capture a special moment in time, is a lifelong treasure that I would love to share with you.
